School Rules

VISITORS ON CAMPUS

All visitors on campus, including parents, must first come to the sign-in desk at the front gate security to receive a VISITOR’s PASS. Upon leaving, please return to the sign-in desk to sign out and return the VISITOR’S PASS.

REPORT CARDS

Woodland Hills Elementary has three reporting periods. The first report cards is sent home after the formal conference. The last report card is sent home on the last day of the school.

RELEASE OF STUDENTS

In order to assure the maximum degree of safety and protection for children, it is imperative children do not leave school during school hours including lunch period.

If a pupil is to leave school during school hours for other reasons, the parents or other authorized person must come to the office and be identified. A child will be released ONLY IN THE OFFICE AND ONLY TO A PERSON WHOSE NAME APPEARS ON THE EMERGENCY INFORMATION CARD. (if you must have someone, not on the emergency card, pick up your child, please call the office and send a note indicating the authorized person’s name and your permission.)

TRAFFIC AND SAFETY

As a school community, we are concerned about our students’ safety and rely on everyone to do their part.  Please take extra caution and show extra courtesy when dropping our children off at school in the morning.

We are experiencing congestion near the De La Osa Gate, near safety valet, and near our marquee.  Please do not cross lanes when dropping off at the Kindergarten Valet.  Also, please do not make U-turns either at drop off or dismissal near the De La Osa Gate, rather proceed up the hill which will bring you back to San Feliciano.

I, personally, stopped a few vehicles which came too close to children at this junction.  I cannot stress enough how important it is that we all:

1. Take our time, whether by leaving an extra ten minutes early or by parking further away and walking and

2. Follow traffic and safety rules around our campus.

We will be discussing this further at our Neighborhood Watch Meeting. Also, please note that our officers have been taking down plate numbers of those who have made moving violations.

We appreciate your cooperation.

LIBRARY

Library is open during school hours from 8:10 to 2:25.

VOLUNTEERS

Woodland Hills Elementary School strives to provide the best education, services and facilities for our children. To make that happen, WE NEED YOUR HELP! Any amount of time you are able to provide can be put to good use even if it’s only for an hour or two at a time. Your kids will be glad you (and they’ll be proud of you too)! Volunteers need to have a T.B. negative test on file, and have to sign in with the front gate security to obtain a volunteer sticker before entering the campus.

LOST AND FOUND

Items without proper labeling found on the school yard, auditorium, or library, are put in an area close to the front gate. Unclaimed items are donated to Goodwill and Salvation army once a month. Please remember to label your child’s clothing and personal items. Please check for your lost items in the Lost and Found area regularly.

PERSONAL PROPERTY

The LAUSD does not provide insurance for loss of or damage to personal property of students. School administrators have been urged to notify parents and students that since there is no insurance, bringing personal property to school, particularly large sums of money or expensive jewelry, clothing, radios, video games, watches, etc., should be discouraged. Any item that pose a safety problem to the students will be confiscated and will only be returned to the student’s parent. Valuable items should NOT be brought to school. Teachers and other staff work with students to help them learn to respect the property of others. In addition, if property is stolen, attempts are made to find it, but this is not always possible.

ASSEMBLY

During assemblies, the campus will be open to those who wish to attend. We welcome your participation in our assemblies and know how happy the students are to see their parents.

USE OF CELL PHONES

Students are permitted to possess on campus cellular phones, or pagers provided any such device shall remain OFF and stored in backpack, purse, or other places where it is not visible during normal school hours. The cell phones and pagers are NOT to be used in school campus or during field trips unless specific permission is granted by school personnel. If a student needs to reach a parent or guardian in case of an emergency they can access the office telephone with a pass from the teacher or after school supervisor.

AFTER SCHOOL PLAYGROUND

Woody’s Club program will begin on the first day of classes. The lower playground will be open from the close of school until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, except for school and legal holidays.

The After School Program is provided by the LAUSD as an additional resource of the community’s recreational facilities. The program is planned for students who are capable of independent supervision, with one or two adult supervisors.

DRESS CODE

We have a student dress code that will be strictly enforced. In general, sturdy, comfortable, age-appropriate clothing is recommend for school. Children must wear closed toe shoes which gives them the best possible support. Slip-ons, sandals or thongs are not safe on the playground. Girls and boys should wear socks to protect their feet and ankles.

ATTENDANCE AND ILLNESS

Attendance

School attendance is vital to student achievement. Students who develop patterns of good attendance are much more likely to be successful both academically and socially.  When students consistently attend school, they get better grades, score better on standardized tests and are more likely to go to college.  It is our collective responsibility to teach students the importance of attendance now so they are prepared for the future.   As you are aware, employers always indicate that good attendance demonstrates responsibility and is a key factor in the hiring and promotion of employees.  When it comes to school, it’s also the law.  Parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring their children go to school, every day, on time.   For our part, we will continue to make sure our students feel welcome, safe and enthusiastic about showing up.

What can parents do to improve attendance?

  •      Plan family vacations for non-school days only.
  •      Schedule non-emergency medical and dental appointments after school hours.
  •      Make sure your child‘s school has your accurate daytime contact information,   including cell phone number, e-mail address and equally important, your home address.
  •      Communicate often with your child‘s teachers.
  •      Gain access to the Family Module and monitor your child’s up-to-the-minute,  attendance progress online. Ask your child‘s school administrator about the Family Module.  Note: this program is still in the development phase and as soon as it becomes available we will schedule training for parents.
  •      Make your school aware of any problems that may be causing your child to miss school.

An absence defined by law:

C.C.R. Title 5, Section 306 – A principal or teacher may require satisfactory explanation from the parent or guardian of a pupil, either in person or by written note, whenever the pupil is absent a part or all of a school day or tardy.

Parents, please provide a note for every absence!

What is an excused absence?

A pupil shall be excused from school when the absence is:

Due to his or her illness

Due to quarantine under the direction of a county or city health officer

For the purpose of having medical, dental, optometric or chiropractic services rendered.

For the purpose of attending the funeral services of a member of his or her immediate family, so long as the absence is not more than one day if the service is conducted in California and not more than three days if the service is conducted outside California.

For justifiable personal reasons including, but not limited to, an appearance in court, attendance at a funeral service, observance of a holiday or ceremony of his or her religion, attendance at religious retreats or attendance at an employment conference when the pupil‘s absence has been requested in writing by the parent or guardian and approved by the principal or a designated representative.

Can work be made up for an excused absence?

When a pupil is absent from school for the above excused reasons, he/she shall be allowed to complete all assignments and tests missed during the absence that can reasonably be provided and, upon satisfactory completion, shall be given full credit. The teacher of any class from which a pupil is absent shall determine what assignments the pupil shall make up and in what period of time the pupil shall complete such assignments. The tests and assignments shall be reasonably equivalent to, but not necessarily identical to, the tests and assignments that the pupil missed during the absence. A pupil absent from school for excused reasons may make up the work by attending Saturday School.

What is an unexcused absence?

Any absence for reasons other than those listed as EXCUSED ABSENCES are deemed unexcused. The District is required by law to seek an explanation (a written note or verbal justification) regarding all absences. Upon the third unexcused or uncleared absence for more than any 30 minute period from school in any school year, the student may be classified as a truant. This could be grounds for referral to the SARB and on to the City or District Attorney‘s Office for possible prosecution.
